As a part of the City’s Sustainable Energy Strategy, the City is installing more than 5 megawatts of solar, including solar covered parking installations, using thin film or crystalline solar panel technology at parks, community centers, and fire stations by the end of 2011. Two phases of solar covered parking are currently planned, with one lot completed in December 2010 and three lots under construction using Recovery Act funds for a combined installation of 827 kW. The second phase will be installed leveraging Recovery Act bonds and other funding sources from the first phase. When both phases are completed, nearly 1.8 MW of solar covered parking will have been installed over 1,720 parking spaces.

At Centennial Hills Community Center, located in the Centennial Hills town center in northwest Las Vegas within Ward 6, panels shade 87 parking spaces. The total size of the system is 70 kW and will generate approximately 14,000 kWh, offsetting the building's meter by about 20 percent. Funding for the project came from City of Las Vegas Green Building funds and NV Energy SolarGenerations rebates. Leading the construction and successful completion of the project was TWC Construction.
